Sweet Wanderings at “The Dessert Museum”

Sweet Wanderings at “The Dessert Museum”

“Dessert is like a feel-good song and the best ones make you dance.” ~Chef Edward Lee~

My being enthralled with Broadway hits is something I always look forward to every year, this time, we booked earlier to watch “Lion King Manila” in celebration of their 50th show, which is set here in my country, at Solaire Hotel just a few blocks away from Conrad Hotel where “The Dessert Museum” is located.

Jen as always, supports me with my fascination, she secured us 2 seats months ago and I am thankful for her to do such things for me, however, there is a tweak that I sometimes need to give support to her whims too. And while waiting for our slots for that night’s show, she brought me first to “The Dessert Museum”.

Left photo grabbed from: https://www.thedessertmuseum.com/

Obviously, said place is meant for the young ones like her, not that I’m admitting to the fact that I am no longer that young, but even with what I’m wearing, I could have gone there in a more comfortable clothes or could have worn flat shoes or even rubber shoes. Well, that is what friends are for.

I opted to go barefoot but I can’t stand it. =(

The museum is for kids at heart, curated for this popular and very influential generation: The Millennials who would immediately post their experiences via photos or videos on their social media accounts. Most of them would refer to it as “Instagrammable” or Instagram worthy shots. =)

Naughty or Nice? =)

In less than an hour, we were able to wander inside this candy-like museum and honestly, I enjoyed it too. Specifically loving the pastel colors all around me, it felt sweet. =)

To set expectations, you will wander on eight (8) themed rooms which are as follows:

– Donuts

– Marshmallows

– Candy canes

I loved their macarons. =)

– Ice cream

I opted to go barefoot but I can’t stand it. =(
Of course, my ice cream is “ube” flavor. =)
She doesn’t wanna leave the room.

– Bubble gum

I remember I have a video inside a huge bubble, I just can’t find it. But I’ll post it as soon as I did. Sorry. =( It was so much fun!

– Cotton candy (The sweetest room and my favorite!)

– Gummy bears

– Cakes

Feeling kid… I think she really enjoyed being here.

Six of the 8 rooms come with a free dessert and my favorite is the marshmallow in two different flavors which you will get a chance to dip it yourself either from their purple yam (ube flavor) and strawberry fountain. Oh, I think it is what I like best and the cotton candy too and the macarons.

There are attendants to brief you before the adventure begins. It felt exciting at that time. Out of excitement, I was in between listening attentively to the guide and saying “Come on let’s go!” Since it is literally something new. Each of the themed rooms are manned by attendants who will sweetly offer you your choice of a free dessert before they lead you to the next room. They are there to assist you from the first to the last of all the 8 rooms. It wasn’t just fun but educational as well. That free dessert? That was my most favorite part. =) The sweet tooth that I’ve always been.

Your last stop will be shopping. There are good finds in their Souvenir shop (food and Non-food). But we wouldn’t want to be late on our next stop right? So maybe next time. =)

The Dessert Museum is located at unit 124, 126, 127a, Coral way, S Maison Mall, Conrad Hotel, Manila, MOA, Pasay City

Find time to visit this one of a kind museum and surely, you will find it very entertaining and of course sweet. =) There is also a system that they implemented where each guest(s) or group(s) will truly enjoy said museum by making it not that crowded, allowing you to maximize your time taking photos and enjoying the activity itself. I find it very organized. You can actually book online, via this link: https://www.thedessertmuseum.com/howtobook/

Why BURGER GEEK?

Why BURGER GEEK?

“To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.”

My sons’ girlfriend and I were trying to to look for a place to try at Molito’s in Alabang since we are free that weekend.

a boutique mall
Molito is a Boutique mall down in south.

Out of the many establishments to choose from, we filtered our choices with just two: Burgers or Pizzas. And at last, we found and opted for this odd though uniquely named burger joint: The “Burger Geek”.

facade

It sounded cute, it brought to my mind bevy of millennials enjoying each other’s company. It is so them. My kids. The ones born during the early 1990s. That one of a kind generation! The babies of the Gen X which where I belong! =)

my kids

Burger Geek is just small in terms of space, you can call in advance to reserve a table. Still, they were able to splash the desired effect of the theme that they’re trying to imbibe.

This mural resembled the Periodic table of elements only that each letter represents ingredients and tools that they use in their kitchen.

So here’s what we’ve got:

nachos burger geek

Echo my son opted for the “Hangover” (because the ingredients of the patties has beer in it), I had my usual nachos and our baby girl ordered for “B+” (B stands for bacon) =).

We were served with a complimentary prawn crackers which is known locally as “Kropek”.

kropek

It was a short dining experience but was very memorable as I was with my son and someone very close to him and me as well. They are my family.

iced tea
It is bottomless. =)

I’ve always known the importance of spending quality time with kids because we are not the only one who’s busy, they are quite busy too and to find time being with each other allows us to create memories that we can look back at later in our lives.

We intend to do it more often, and had plans laid out already, different activities to bond aside from eating. =)

I assumed that Burger Geek have a specific market that they want to target, however, I guess they attracted several markets due to the uniqueness and tastefulness of their food.

Slightly “eyesore” (in my opinion)

Purple Beetle…

PURPLE BEETLE

“Where focus goes, energy flows.”~Tony Robbins~

It all started with this photo.

dreamy
Courtesy of: http://www.imgrum.org/media/1276837540570395942_1725691340

This is probably one of the most beautiful dream catcher that I’ve seen. It isn’t a painting, it isn’t a drawing, but a photo of a real dream catcher (s). Not just one but several dream catchers put together creating a very beautiful masterpiece. I’ve always thought and assumed that it is somewhere not near, maybe in a different country.

Then one day, while browsing for hotels to stay out of town, I came across this cafe in Lipa, Batangas. It’s called Purple beetle.

2

A graffiti of a native Indian struck me, with all kinds of dream catchers surrounding it. Colorful feathers here and there. As I went further, a very familiar window captured my attention. It was that window with the dream catchers I’ve seen months ago. I couldn’t believe that it is here in my country.

9
If I can only “DIY” this! ❤

As if running out of time, I immediately asked Jen to visit Batangas because I really wanted to see this cafe. There have been many blogs about it, though I really wanted to see it myself.

We were able to squeeze it with our busy schedules. Just recently, we decided (finally – after contemplating if we can do it) to go to the gym regularly. Adding up another activity that we try to manage inspite of our conflicting schedules tons of work in the office and at home.

We took a bus from Alabang, and it took us less than 2 hours to reach Lipa, Batangas. I must not forget to mention that I admired the town for its’ cleanliness, the roads are very organized, bus stations are situated in just one location giving comfort to commuters and tourists alike.

12021

Lipa City never felt like a province to me. I saw McDonalds one block after another, I saw a total of 3 McDonalds in Lipa. It was funny, because in my own hometown, I am happy that our village is in front of McDonalds, however, the next is an hour ride from its’ location. Very province right?!

The main roads in Lipa are a bit wider too, and before we reached our destination. It was inspiring to discover that Purple beetle is sandwiched by known restaurants like Army Navy, two very popular coffee shops: CBTL and Starbucks, and you will be surprised
to witness that despite of the competitors surrounding the place, their tables were seldom empty. When we arrived, we even have to wait for some tables to be vacated and we never had the chance to choose spots we like. I don’t mind, I’m just after that window with the dream catchers.

They also sell boho stuff: of course dream catchers in all sizes, hairdresses, boho tops and dresses, tasseled bags, shawls, and mandala spreads.

Let’s take a look at their menu:

We opted to have nachos salad and quesadillas which they called “Pizzadilla” because it has toppings too. I had my purple slush and Jen had coffee.

Much as I do not want to be too transparent in my blogs. The place is just hype, famous among Millennials (Coachella type), but they need to make another study when it comes to the food that they’re offering.

The pizadilla, since it has toppings and fillings at the same time, tasted nothing but salty. No feel of the other ingredients due to its’ saltiness. The tortilla wasn’t able to balance it, apparently, my palette normally requires salty taste from time to time, but this one I couldn’t tolerate.

In all my travels, several times I’ve proven that a picture can literally speak a thousand words. One can look so beautiful in pictures, when in reality, it is not that pretty if not disappointing. Honestly, the photos enticed me. The likes of Sonya’s Garden, Prado farm weren’t that pretty in reality. They were pretty in their own terms, but they didn’t have that “wow” factor. That feeling of satisfaction that you’re happy you came.

Jen was too positive to tell me that out of the many travels we’ve made, the disappointments are very few. That most travels made us happy because it surpassed our expectations. One piece of advise is to seek opinion of those who saw a specific place already. And you’ll never go wrong. Besides, it is always been a part of the adventure. Usually, it is not the place, it is the adventure itself.

PURPLE BEETLE  is at Ayala Highway, Lipa City, Batangas Philippines 4217. You can send them email at: hello@purplebeetle.com.ph with telephone number: 0998-855-7732.

STEAM YARD Coffee and Community..

STEAM YARD Coffee and Community..

“Good coffee is a pleasure, while good friends are a treasure!”

My encounter with this coffee shop cum retail/ concept store is by accident while I was waiting for a document in the Municipal hall of Muntinlupa City. The shop’s location is just a stone throw away situated alongside other known establishments. It was raining at that time and I had to look for a dry place to stay.

The calligraphy in front of them lured me to go inside and was instantly amazed by it.

I see these only on the pages of a magazine..

Such a looker..

There are more inside, a coffee shop that serves blueberry cheesecake and a dozen of on-line brands lined-up with their beckoning displays.

Wide choices..

sy-shop
From first visit, I think I’ve bought a dozen already of various items from food to non-food..

Their items are those of millennials, however, the interiors is an amalgam of industrial and rustic motif. They also infused touches of Harry potter facets. You won’t fail to notice that the crowd they attract are students and young executives and those that are young at heart which includes me.

I want this! =)

It was also very obvious that the owners (who are millennials too) are one of those manning the shop, in both areas (coffee shop and retail shop). You will notice it from their zesty appeal. Their above-board earnestness to provide good service to each guest that comes in is very evident.

The rest of the team are well-trained too. The Security officer flashes a bright smile to all those who enter the shop. Indeed, the atmosphere is very positive. There is a force that surrounds it like Harry’s magic and believe me, no one went out empty-handed. Or so I think only for those that I’ve seen.

cha
She said she will come back too.. Like I said when it was my first time to visit..

Initially, I ordered for a drink, my usual iced cafe latte, a few items I bought out of impulse. And a promise that I will bring my friends there.

sy-cafe-latte
My cafe latte..

Before I leave, they called my attention and handed me with a card that came with a stamp and upon completing the rest of it (total of 10) will equate for a free drink. Not bad for a Marketing strategy, especially when they are just a few months old.

Despite of showing enthusiasm for icons that isn’t Filipino (I’m referring to Harry potter), the coffee they’re brewing is brewed locally.

sy-coffee
All about coffee and more..

There are packed gourmets which ratifies local producers. And honestly, they are packed well with attractive rustic labels.

sy-sugar
They have the usual and they have syrups too..
sy-soaps
They have soaps, lotions, balms that are organic..

During my second visit. I purchased more items, for myself, for my soul daughter, for a colleague and tried their meals with cakes over coffee.

sy-lunch
We’re starving..

Jen okayed the place however she is a bit disappointed since their coffee didn’t have provision for those who wanted theirs with swirls of cream.

When we informed them that it might help if they provide it, they expressed their gratitude for the suggestion and assured us that it is under-study.

On my third visit with another millennial, I brought my son’s bff who is almost like a daughter to me, took her a few tops, and we had pasta and cakes over coffee. She is more excited than I due to the fact that she is also a Harry Potter enthusiast.

sy-bb-cheesecake
We’re done with our orders when we thought of pasta.. Recommendation: more gravy for the steak sandwich..
sy-pasta
Typical marinara.. Recommendation: More sauce for this serving or less pasta..

Maybe we will visit every so often since we liked the idea of shopping and dining in one single place. Another important factor that I considered is that their items are of limited production so there’ll be no worries to see yourself wearing the same dress that the girl you passed by is wearing.

Cha and moi..

The price, both for food and merchandise is competitive too.

LA MARIPILI – A classic treat reinvented…

La Maripili – A classic treat reinvented..

Churros are a common goodies during my teenage years. Over and above, It is  my best friend’s favorite. We will save our money just to go to Greenbelt, Makati (our school is in Manila) and guzzle with our portions which came with hot chocolate. It came from a teensy Spanish restaurant – Dulcinea. Oftentimes, we leave with take out bags of goodies containing beehives, eclairs, lemon squares, etc and we sometimes couldn’t wait and munch on them while still in the car.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot about churros. Several establishments have endorsed it as one of their offerings and I even went all the way to Manila just to try the one from Bay leaf hotel, at Cioccolata.

Some low-end churros are baked and are not deep fried also find their way in the market. And even if the latter is not that good to our health, I still prefer it than those that are baked. I missed the goodness in its’ crunch I guess.

Just recently, there’s a new brand endorsing a new version which if I can call them churros for “the hungry ones”. Because it is over-sized and longer like 4x more than that of the usual that we used to have from Dulcinea more than 20 years ago. Back then, we were provided with a small ceramic pot and we will pour the choco syrup in a separate cup and there we dip our churros as we pleased.

Now, it comes in paper cups and is measured and served with just an ample quantity.

Bloggers like me would avoid as much as possible giving derogatory remarks whenever we didn’t like a recently discovered place(s) much so the service rendered by attendants. It is popular probably because of networking sights, bloggers, a good marketing arm and probably if the owner is a celebrity. The product seems to be over-rated.

This frustration was nullified by the most recent churros brand that I accidentally discovered from my best friend’s daughter’s her Instagram posts. Her mom happens to be my college BFF whose favorite is churros (and up to now, she will still ask us to visit Dulcinea from time to time). And I was the one who preferred eclairs. So it’s like me saying: “Like mother, like daughter”.

La Maripili is in Alabang. Almost across Molito and considered as an annex of ATC which also happens to be my rendevouz while I was still a student.

Its’ facade is all white, beckoning with its French door and floor to ceiling glass windows. You can’t help but have your photos taken in front of it.

la-6
Come on, let’s have some churros! =)

And as we enter, the huge mirror on one wall is with “millennial” phrasings and words about churros, food & beverage in general and some inspirational quotes. I must say that aside from the transparent kitchen, that mirror is the focal point of the place.

la-2
Nice to have greens above it..
la-3
Churros! =)

Focal point..

Their menu is user-friendly ( unlike the other brand I talked about), the attendants seem to be with excitement each time a guest arrives and were accommodating. Of course, they up-sell, which I think is part of their spiels. And it didn’t take us long to get our orders. #quickservice

Anything but caramel..
Anything but caramel..

It is a bit pricey though it is given that most establishments in Alabang town center caters to the medium/high end crowd.

While it’s worth it because their churros brought me back to memory lane  – college days.

Just the right size..=)
Just the right size..=)

It is deep fried but they make it a point to drain them well. The chocolate dip is so thick that it looked like almost melted chocolate bars.

Very thick choco syrup..

As part of innovating, they have variants which come with fillings in different flavors. we tried the one with caramel. What else?

With Ms. Caramel! =)

As OC (obsessive/compulsive) as I can get, I was able to check the frying station and it surprised me to see that the oil is clean and almost transparent.

Nice!
Nice!

Their specialty, their chosen product to reach their target market and add the place ideal for some cozy talk and/or bonding with family and friends and their trained roster. I have to say that it is worth a commendation. Till our next cravings. =)
