I’m in the mood for Mood boards!

If you love designing, people will love your design. ~ Onur Mustak Cobanli

Coming from 2 blogs on Interior Designing. I thought of sharing with you my ardor in preparing “Mood boards”.

Though for those who haven’t encounter this yet, let me explain first what is a Mood board. A Mood board is very similar to a Vision board or a Dream board. It is like a manifestation tool through a collage or sets of photos of the things you want to happen or see them happening.

Having a dream board and placing it somewhere you can see it all the time allows you to own it. Your thoughts of having them, or imagining yourself with them actually brings them to life. In living colors! =) It’s like a reminder of the things you want to see happening very soon.

The same principle is applied into Mood boards. It is practically your actual recommendation to your clients. An effective way to communicate your thoughts and visions and easier for clients to understand.

It also allows the clients to see right away your exact idea and proposal so immediately from there, you can already discuss whether the client likes it or not.

It enables them to visualize what the place would look like. What specific items to use, what matches their preference, what color fits a particular color, and if what they want is feasible or not, if it’s nice to look at, giving consideration to aesthetics and functionality.

Through this, clients can also anticipate budget to allocate upon seeing the furniture, the accessories and other stuff to complete a space or room as desired.

It is a powerful tool to perform Creative Visualization.

It is an initial presentation to your client, like a first draft to fine-tune and finalize things. First and foremost, it works both ways, it helps you and your client to come up with the final and approved design prior to execution.

Here’s a list of the usual items you should include:

  1. Color palette
  2. Furniture recommended
  3. Accessories
  4. Furnishings
  5. Lighting fixtures
  6. Swatches of window and floor treatments and upholstery
  7. Source of inspiration
  8. Floor plan
  9. Moods the space adheres to create through use of positive adjectives. Example:
  • cozy
  • rustic
  • comfy
  • glam
  • happy

10. Short descriptions

11. Don’t forget to tell a story, put titles on your recommendations, below are examples of titles:

  • A Charming Retreat (for a country-side rustic bedroom for a 30 year old career woman)
  • A Bachelor’s pad
  • An Adventurer’s Abode
  • Purple Royalty
  • Southern Chill
  • Timeless Beauty

Please take a look at some of the mood boards I’ve lovingly created in the past:

While in this Mood board, you can already identify colors preferred and there are short descriptions.

This is the ideal Mood board, it includes the floor plan or the lay-out and the actual materials to use.

While this one, the Designer was playful enough to include Inspirational quotes imbibing the mood of her plans and visions.

Usually, for Mood boards such as this one, there is an attachment that includes detailed list of materials to use.

Mood boards aren’t just for Interior Designers, it is also being utilized by Fashion Designers, Make-up Artists, Event Planners (especially Weddings) even Travellers utilize them too.

Also, there are sites online that can give you pro tips and help you prepare amazing ones (like it isn’t your first time) such as milanote.com, creativebloq.com, gomoodboard.com. There’s a lot out there. Even “apps”. =)

Try one and I’m sure it can only spell happiness as it brings out the creative juices in you. Please remember that there is always an “artist” in all of us. =).

Play around, research, spice it up with things that inspires you, those items you wanted to see at home. It can be outlined properly, or it can be a collage. It’s your call. Don’t limit yourself. It’s like dreaming and it’s okay to dream. Dream big. =) The bigger, the better! =)

P.S. As a reminder, Mood board is also different from Color board or Swatch board. This is where all the materials to use are reflected as your reference of the colors approved by the client.

-An only daughter. A mother of a 22 year old son. Passionate with so many things. A lover of life itself. First of which is to write. Then, sing (I specifically love the stage), read, cook, travel & take beautiful pictures (photography) and scrap booking, all of which are my own way of coping with life's challenges. Lately, I have been enjoying quilting and crafting with beaded fabrics. Friends usually associate me with the color violet. I love this color so much! However, I love pink, red, teal, orange, yellow as well! Coffee is my water and my happy food is cheesecake topped w/ blueberries, frozen yogurt, sansrival and cream puff. I mastered fettuccine carbonara because that is one of my favorite food along w/ broccoli with prawns and mushrooms. Of all the International cuisines, Japanese food is on top of my list. Secretly, I love "Stitch" - that grinning indigo pup. =) Seriously, I dream to become a philanthropist (starting off by providing shelter to street children in our country) and a famous author someday. I'm just waiting for God's time for my first book to be published.- It took me years to decide to blog, more so to write and have it out in the open. I started writing even as a child, I just keep them on file. It was my outlet. Approaching the year(s) they say where life begins, or If I may say, the sweeter life. It was a year full of emotions. As I lost both my parents already, the unfathomable sadness prompted me to pour them out in my writings and share them to the world, hoping it might lighten the heaviness of my heart. I live now with my son as a mother and as a daughter (as a friend and a sister), this has made me be ready to finally do what I am meant to do. Even If there's a lot that I wanted to do. This came first, like a first love that occupied a special place in my heart. It's a looong process, tiring, frustrating, exciting. The best part? is the happiness it brings. Even if things around seems all so wrong. It's like having my own place under the sun. My own safe and happy rainbowed world. At times, there's guilt as well, for I strongly believe, writing (like singing) is a talent God has gifted us. We ought to use it and maximize it, in our littlest way, share it to mankind, for His glory. I just had a few distractions over the years and to realize that it is never too late to be who we ought to be, I have this very strong feeling, now is the time. All my life, I have decided on things that made me happy, this is one of those. I may never be a winner of those best blogs that have been awarded to talented writers/ bloggers and I don't mind, there are strikes of being envious, but according to my father, there are two kinds of being envy. There's envy that is negative, it'll hamper you from doing good and there's an envy that makes you happy for others' success, or seeing yourself in their shoes, I think, the kind of envy in me, is the latter. Like celebrities who missed an Oscar, while the film was watched by the whole world, she/he did not mind, it's like knowing what counts best, and it's the capacity to share your talents to anyone who wants to receive it, without asking anything in return. Expressing what's in my heart and mind on every occasion (which happens to be daily) and being happy about it is like a prize already. Happy reading!(--,)
